Not Not Not Starting a Startup
April 14, 2007

Paul Graham wrote a new thought-provoking essay. Why to Not Not Start a Startup. Yes, a double negative. He’s coming from a venture company that invests in startups. It’s a long read but do take some time out to go through it.

Unfortunately, as much as I’d like to take his advice, I can’t do it [...]

Quality and the Software Developer MBA
April 12, 2007

MBA for Software Developers. Sounds like an oxymoron. Most software developers would probably consider a MBA only if they are in or moving to a management role, changing careers, or starting up their own business.

Why this topic? No, I’m not taking a MBA (yet?) It’s because I’m studying Software Quality as part of my job [...]

Why no Pinoys in Google or Tech Startups?
April 7, 2007

More thinking.

I don’t know of any Philippines-educated Filipino in Google or other tech startups. It’s either Fil-ams born and raised in the US, or in the rarer case, Pinoys who attended university or graduate school abroad.

Pinoys I know or hear about who join the exodus don’t get to these hot companies.

Do we lack the means, [...]

Where are the Pinoy Open Source Developers?
March 27, 2007

I was a Pinoy Open Source Developer, years ago. Now, I’m trying to get back, to contribute to the open source tools I use for work.
Where are the Pinoy Open Source Developers? A few years ago this was a topic at PLUG. The discussion back then was that Pinoys are too busy working. If they [...]

exodus
February 26, 2007

At the start of this month, I found this post of my fellow Blogparteehista: Growth means going abroad?
Appropriate. In the Java community, it seems a lot of folks are moving to Singapore. I heard it’s because the Indians are going home? Our little group had a get-together to send people off. One of my [...]

My Hobby Programming
February 20, 2007

I went to a Book Sale branch in Cubao yesterday, and I bought Effective C#.
Why this, when I use Java for work? It’s confusing to work with both Java and C# at the same time since they are too similar.
There were Java books at that branch, mostly from APress. But they were about specific technologies, [...]

The SCJP Review Process
February 5, 2007

I’m reviewing for the Sun Certified Java Programmer exam, version 5.0.
In my IT career, I have never taken any certifications. I was never asked for them when applying for a job.
I’m now taking it because for my current job, our outsourcing customers might look for certified people to handle their projects. We have plans to [...]

Need a job in the Philippines? Join Brainbench
December 12, 2006

While I’m not looking for a job, recruiters keep on bugging me. Two recruiters from a certain local outsourcing company contacted me: one through the BrainBench “leave a business card,” and another through my cellphone. I verified that the call was also through BrainBench.
I didn’t really think of BrainBench as a job site. I posted [...]

I am not looking for a job
November 28, 2006

A recruiter called me at my employer’s number. My local isn’t well known so the call got transferred to another location and my colleague answered it.
Ms. Recruiter asked, I got your name through “Link In” website – realized after a while it was LinkedIn. Instead of contacting me through LinkedIn, she probably searched for my [...]
